Coaching & Counseling

“The therapist’s role is both intellectual and relational, fostering both insight and empathic connection” – Judith Herman, MD

Coaching is directive, short-term, and goal-oriented related to enhancing wellbeing and exploring possibilities. While counseling is a dynamic, evidence-based process of uncovering deeper issues such as family of origin patterns, adverse childhood experiences, or challenging unhelpful cognitions and core beliefs.

Counseling stems from the rich traditions of psychotherapy which provide the theoretical foundation to acknowledge personal losses and navigate difficult life events; while incorporating the solutions-focused approaches of coaching. Both coaching and counseling sessions include the application of resilience building, emotional intelligence, and stress regulation techniques as part of a comprehensive service plan.

Fully becoming a master at recovering from trauma requires an acknowledgement of three possible stages in recovery: establishing safety, reconstructing the traumatic story, and establishing connection as described in “Trauma and Recovery” written by Judith Herman, M.D., 1992. However, according to Babette Rothschild, LCSW, the second phase of “reconstructing the trauma story” is not necessary to heal; and that, “The only goal of trauma recovery should be to improve the person’s quality of life”. With that in mind, the client in recovery can choose if jogging the memories will help or hinder them. In most cases, I’ve found that clients know what is right for them intuitively.

The following two programs are designed to approach these stages and help clients gain a mastery over the recovery process.

Crisis Intervention: Here-And-Now Issues, Developing a What to Expect Plan, & Understanding Trauma Symptoms. Receive up-to-date counseling information and comprehensive referrals to create a personalized emotional and physical safety plan.

Personal Growth & Development: Develop a personal hero story that aligns with your goals and aspirations. Learn how to normalize and move through the common stages in trauma recovery; and turn them into thoughts and feelings that you control. Integrate modern, optimal health and wellness techniques into a personalized development plan.
